Sherry’s Run Organization Provides Assistance in Macon County
The Sherry’s Run organization works year round to provide financial, spiritual and emotional assistance to those in the community who are battling cancer. In 2018, the Sherry’s Run organization provided over $44,600 in assistance to 30 patients and their families in Macon County.
“The Sherry’s Run organization is unique in what we do. We aren’t just a 5K run or one-time assistance and then we are gone. Our mission is to provide assistance while a family is experiencing financial hardship due to a cancer diagnosis,” said Pat Lawson, Executive Director of the Sherry’s Run organization. “A cancer diagnosis often leads to unexpected expenses, such as medical bills, prescriptions and transportation expenses due to doctor visits and treatment appointments. Families can also experience financial hardships due to time someone has to take off from work, either for their own doctor appointments or those in their care like a spouse or a child. This financial burden can often lead to difficulties keeping the lights or water on or even staying in their home. Our mission is to provide assistance with these unexpected burdens, but just as important, to provide emotional support for our patients and their families through our cancer support group and prayer journal at our office as patients request prayers and share praises.”
“We receive the majority of our funding from generous donors and sponsors from local companies who support two large events held each year, Mardi Gras at the Capitol and the Sherry’s Run 5K Run/Walk. We are very thankful to have Macon Bank & Trust host the Macon Days of Hope and Cruise-In Car and Tractor Show all to benefit the Sherry’s Run organization. We greatly appreciate O’Reilly Auto Parts hosting a car show to benefit the Sherry’s Run organization. Macon County High School FBLA sold t-shirts for breast cancer awareness month and generously donated a portion of the proceeds to Sherry’s Run. We also receive memorial donations through the funeral homes in the area. We are very appreciative of the contributions the Macon County area makes to support the work of the Sherry’s Run organization helping those in Macon County who are battling cancer,” said Lawson. “Unfortunately, we haven’t seen a decline in the number of people being diagnosed with cancer. The need for patient assistance continues to grow, meaning we continue to depend on the generosity of the community to assist our friends and neighbors who are battling cancer.”
Sherry’s Run, the area’s largest grassroots cancer fundraising effort, is a non-profit, Christian organization that has helped hundreds of individuals and their families during some of the hardest times of their lives. With community support and involvement, the Sherry’s Run organization helps members of our community year round through support groups; assistance with utilities, housing, prescriptions, medical bills, gas and groceries; and colonoscopy assistance.
