The 13th annual Sherry’s Run 5K Run/Walk is slated for September 10, 2016 in Lebanon.  According to Scott Jasper, Executive Board Member and Race Director, “We feel very fortunate that the support from the community for Sherry’s Run continues to grow each year.  This enables us to help those battling cancer, right here in our communities.  Last year we had over 4,000 participants at the Run.” Jasper continues, “We are making every effort for residents and businesses to plan ahead for this great event.

Most road closures and detours along the routes will be in effect between 6 a.m. and 11 a.m.  At 6:30 a.m. police and event personnel will implement a soft closure along the entire race course.  The race begins at 8 a.m. and streets will reopen on a rolling basis as soon as the last participant has passed and all course support materials have been removed.  Streets along the earlier miles of the route will open earlier than roads along the end of the route.  Residents and businesses located near the race course are urged to plan ahead and be aware of road closure schedules and alternate access routes.”

“We have contacted the residents affected by the specific street closures and want to publicly thank them for their understanding and support,” said Jasper.  He continues, “The folks at Lebanon Public Safety have been a great help to us.  We thank them for their help with event day logistics and for allowing us to close certain streets in town to accommodate this event.” The Sherry’s Run 5K course, which begins at the Sherry’s Run Event Site, 623 West Main Street in Lebanon, will head east on West Main Street, travel north on North Greenwood Street, passing the historic Woolen Mills to U. S. 70 North By-Pass (also known as Baddour Parkway); then heading west on the By-Pass to North Castle Heights Avenue – traveling south to Hill Street.  At Hill Street, walkers may choose to continue on North Castle Heights returning to the Sherry’s Run Event Site or continue on the race course onto Hill Street.  Runners on the other hand will turn left onto Hill Street, traveling east again to North Greenwood Street, then south to West Main Street where they will travel west returning to the Runners Finish Line at the Sherry’s Run Event site.

“Sherry’s Run is one of Wilson County’s largest events.  We are honored that the event has been so successful and are very excited about the future.  We want to take the opportunity to be even better – to become a premier run – a destination for runners from across the State of Tennessee.  We are enthusiastic about the race enhancements and want to meet our participant’s needs and make it safe and fun for them.  The course design offers participants a safe course – one which we hope will be a real crowd pleaser” Jasper commented.  Come join us as we make a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer right here in our community.

Faith, courage, optimism and a desire to help others were qualities that defined Sharon “Sherry” Patterson Whitaker. Both before and after the energetic wife and mother was diagnosed with colon cancer, the impression she made on her family, friends and community was undeniable. While her battle in the flesh was lost in 2004, the spirit she had shown throughout life continues to touch more lives every day. Because of Sherry’s Run, a 5K run/walk benefit organized in Sherry’s memory, area cancer victims and their families can make strides toward becoming cancer survivors, and researchers are a small step closer to stopping the disease for good.
