The highlight of the 13th annual Sherry’s Run event came after the runners had crossed the finish line and the national anthem had been sung. As thousands of supporters gathered around the stage, Executive Board Chair, Tonyia Stockton, announced an unprecedented gift from Drs. Neil Price, Mark Miller, Brett Inglis, and Elizabeth Lindsey of the Lebanon Endoscopy Center, as well as St. Thomas Gastroenterology of Lebanon.

Drs. Price and Miller completed the run just moments before presenting the Executive Board with a check for $300,000 to be given over the course of 5 years. The gift was given in memory of Dr. Donald Cole, local physician who passed in April of this year after dedicating the past 20 years to improving the quality of healthcare for the Wilson County community. “Dr. Cole build a tremendous practice here in this community and we are honored to continue that work. Sherry’s Run meant so much to him.”

“Words cannot express the gratitude we feel for this donation,” says Stockton. “This gift will impact thousands of lives for years to come.”

Faith, courage, optimism and a desire to help others were qualities that defined Sharon “Sherry” Patterson Whitaker. Both before and after the energetic wife and mother was diagnosed with colon cancer, the impression she made on her family, friends and community was undeniable. While her battle in the flesh was lost in 2004, the spirit she had shown throughout life continues to touch more lives every day. Because of Sherry’s Run, a 5K run/walk benefit organized in Sherry’s memory, area cancer victims and their families can make strides toward becoming cancer survivors, and researchers are a small step closer to stopping the disease for good.
