Sherry's Run Honoree Shares Hope
HOPE...It’s what we all search for in the storm. It’s what every cancer patient holds onto in the face of the unknown. Mackey Bentley, owner of Bentley’s Heating and Air and cancer survivor, has a story of hope that has to be told.
In October, 2014, Bentley began having what he thought were minor health problems; severe hiccups and difficulty swallowing. When his doctor found esophageal cancer, he was shocked. A biopsy was scheduled and the news continued to get worse. The results showed cancer in the liver meaning surgery was not an option. With this in mind, the doctors gave him 14 months to live.
In the middle of this storm of emotion, Mackey and his wife, Judy, did what so many do and turned to God and family for support. Their prayers were answered when their close friend, Tonyia Watson, Director of Patient Assistance for Sherry’s Run, encouraged them to get a second opinion.
With the support and encouragement of their family and friends, the Bentley’s went to M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston, Texas filled with fear, but came home with a renewed hope! Further testing showed that the cancer was not in the liver and that surgery was possible. “Mackey’s story proves the value of a second opinion,” says Watson. “It just might save your life!”
The Bentley’s attribute this amazing change to answered prayers. The weekend before they received this news, their friends at Maple Hill church of Christ dedicated 24 hours to fasting and prayer on their behalf. “We know God has heard and answered every prayer on Mackey’s behalf,” says Judy. “We believe he has given Mackey more time on this earth for a reason.”
“Mackey and his family have shared hope with this community for many years by supporting Sherry’s Run and our patients,” says Watson. “We are thankful for the opportunity to honor him at this year’s event and share his story with so many who need to hear a message of hope.”
Hope comes in many forms. For the Bentley’s, it was the hope of surviving cancer. For many of the Sherry’s Run patients, it is the hope of being able to provide for their families while fighting the greatest battle of their lives. The Bentley’s, along with Sherry’s Run, challenge you to find hope and share it with your neighbors!
