Even better, the translucent ceramic quality of today’s veneers provides a more natural look than what’s been available in the past.

SHERRY’S RUN HONORS KENNY SCOTT AT 2011 RUN

Sherry’s Run will honor Kenny Scott this year.  The 37-year old was diagnosed with Follicular Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma last October.  Kenny said he was in shock when the doctor told him he tested positive for lymphoma. Thoughts turned to his mother, who had just completed treatment for a recurrence of breast cancer after 17 years.  He asked himself, “Can this be real?  Can I actually be sitting in a doctor’s office waiting to be scheduled with an oncologist?”

He left the doctor’s office to tell his family and friends the diagnosis, but the thought of telling his children just paralyzed him.  How could he tell his three girls, (Mackenzie 13, Morgan 11, and Kailee 8), that he had cancer.  They would surely think it was a death sentence—and at this point of uncertainty, how could he refute it?  He had made a solemn vow to each when they were born that he would never leave them and that they could always count on him to help them get through life.  Could he keep this promise?

He was told at his first oncology appointment that the type of cancer he had is incurable and that a “wait and see” method was recommended at that time.  He would be treated with chemotherapy, much like a diabetic uses insulin—the chemotherapy shrinks the tumors and they stay small for several years.  As they begin to grow, a return to chemotherapy or a possible bone marrow transplant would be recommended.

As a young man with a wife and three precious children, this approach terrified him.  He had cancer growing inside him and he wanted something to KILL it!  He asked the doctor how this cancer could impact the future of his kids.  After asking their ages, he replied that “more than likely, you will see them graduate from college”.  This meant that in ten years, his situation would be dire.  This was the lowest point of his life.

At church the sermon seemed directed specifically to Kenny’s needs.  He turned his heavy burden over to God and asked Him to use his circumstances to in some way be a blessing to others.  His church family at Maple Hill Church of Christ was so supportive of Kenny and his family.  He said they were a “praying church”, and they certainly prayed for him.

He talked to a local police officer and long time friend who had been diagnosed with the same cancer at basically the same time in his life.  He had faced an uncertain future with his children also.  His friend had been in remission for 11 years!  Kenny said this police officer was the first of many people that God led him to during this struggle to give him encouragement.  Unfortunately the doctor who had cared for his friend was retiring and would not accept a new patient.

While he waited for a call from the oncologist’s office for an appointment to get a second opinion, his life began working on God’s time.  A couple from church contacted a preacher in Nashville and were discussing Kenny’s disappointment that  the  doctor he so desperately wanted to see was retiring & would not take on a new patient.   A lady walked into the preacher’s office and saw the doctor’s picture on his computer screen; she knew the doctor’s sister-in-law & made a call to her in Florida.  The sister-in-law called her sister, the doctor’s wife, and…….long story shortened….Kenny had an appointment the next day to see the doctor who was NOT taking new patients.  The doctor reviewed all of Kenny’s records, researched his case, and referred him to a doctor at Vanderbilt for his continued care.  Within two weeks from his first oncology appointment, he had had a PET scan, bone marrow test, seen a doctor who would not take a new patient, and had an appointment with another doctor.

The test results showed Stage 4 Lymphoma in his neck, chest, underarms, stomach area, groin, and in the bone marrow.  The doctor at Vanderbilt explained the cancer with great compassion, along with all his treatment options.  Kenny told the doctor he had full confidence in his plan of action, and he started his treatments two days later.

He was given the “smart drug” Rituxin, which seeks out the cancer, killing only the cancer cells—not the body’s good cells.  The first treatment took 15 hours and Kenny broke out in hives from his head to his waist.  After three rounds of chemo, the PET scan showed partial remission.  After the sixth treatment, the bone marrow came back clear –  FULL REMISSION!

Kenny and Amy, his wife of 14 years, have been from the depths of despair to a joyous place of peace in less than a year.  They have grown together in faith and in love.  Kenny wants to thank Sherry’s Run for honoring him and everyone for their support and for every prayer sent up on his behalf.   He truly knows “from whence cometh my help”.   He realizes that his journey and recovery has a purpose –and he now freely shares his experience with others as a testimony to the one and true living God.  The words from the song “I Know Who Holds Tomorrow” are so appropriate to describe Kenny’s life today:   I don’t worry o’er the future, for I know what Jesus said; and today I’ll walk beside Him, for He knows what is ahead.  Many things about tomorrow I don’t seem to understand, but I know who holds tomorrow and I know who holds my hand.

Please join Kenny and his family at Sherry’s Run on Saturday, September 10, 2011, as we honor him for his strength and concern for others and celebrate his remission.  The Run begins at 8:00 a.m. in Lebanon, beside the main office of Wilson Bank & Trust, 623 West Main Street.  Mark your calendar and make a commitment to join us.
